Departures (おくりびと)

Although we have been seeing more and more Japanese films in the local cinemas recently. The quality of most of the stories remain mediocre at best (except for Yoji Yamada's period pieces).

Rare Japanese movies of such exceptional calibre which is able to invoke both laughter and tears are far and few between. In fact, I do not remember any that was able to do both except for 'Crying Out Love in the Centre of the World' which manages one quite adequately.

The storytelling is very well paced and what turns out to be a comedy slowly works its way to the softer spots of your Heart. It tackles many subject and ironies regarding the unexpectedness of Life and Death which naturally brings about many different emotions.

I have no idea what the movie is about before except that it dwells on the subject of the deceased and that it won the best foreign film award in the Oscars.

For those who plan to but have not been able to find time to see it. I sincerely implore you to make time for this film as it is totally worth your time and money. However, do make your booking as it has been selling out ever since it started screening.
